The mobile workstation: runtime, payload, and little else matters as much

A computer cart is not a rolling piece of furniture. It is a complete workstation — handheld or laptop, label printer, scanner, sometimes a screen — that has to last a full shift without being plugged back in.

Three quantities decide the model. Real runtime with the printer under load, not the figure quoted idle: a thermal head draws in bursts and a battery sized for a laptop alone collapses. Payload, which must include the weight of the battery itself. And whether the battery can be hot-swapped without stopping the station, when the operation runs several shifts.

The rest — dimensions, material, castors — follows from the environment. Stainless steel is justified in food processing and washdown areas, not in ordinary order picking where it only adds cost and weight.

Forklift mounts: the point that stalls projects

The question asked over and over in equipment makers' FAQs is always the same: is the mount compatible with the machine's overhead guard? There is no standard between forklift manufacturers. Tube diameter, section, the space available around the driving position and the compliant position of the screen all vary model by model.

Two mistakes recur. The first is ordering a mount from a photograph, without measuring the tube or checking clearance in the driving position. The second is neglecting damping: a rigid mount transmits every vibration of the machine on a concrete floor to the device, which eventually destroys connectors and internal ribbon cables long before the casing fails.

An anti-vibration mount with an AMPS plate and the right arm length costs a fraction of the device it protects. It is the most cost-effective accessory in this family, and the one most often cut from a quotation to hold a budget.

Consumables, the forgotten budget line

Labels, ribbons, spare batteries and cables represent, over three years, a share of the budget that almost nobody costs at purchase. They are nonetheless the only recurring items.

Two simple rules avoid unpleasant surprises. First, lock the label format before buying the machine, not the other way round: an exotic format is paid for twice, at purchase and at every reorder. Second, check that the recommended ribbon — wax, wax-resin or resin — matches the real constraint: abrasion, cold, solvents, outdoor exposure. A wax ribbon on a label that rubs inside a tote fades within days.

Vocabulary, frequently mistranslated

Also computer cart or mobile IT cart. In French: chariot informatique mobile, poste de travail mobile or servante informatique. IT trolley is understood but less standard.

Estación de trabajo móvil (ES)

The literal carro informático is atypical in Spanish. Iberian suppliers say estación de trabajo móvil, or describe a solución de puesto móvil con terminal embarcado.

Carretilla is not transpaleta

In Spanish, carretilla is the forklift truck and transpaleta the pallet truck. A soporte para carretilla is therefore not a pallet truck mount. In English: forklift mount.
