Theoretical mesh is never enough: metal racking changes propagation with the fill rate. An on-site RF survey remains the only reliable measurement.

Roaming, the blind spot of product datasheets

Catalogues describe radio standards, throughput and VLANs very well. They are silent on what actually sinks warehouse projects: how a vehicle-mounted terminal behaves as it crosses several radio cells in a few seconds.

A WMS session or a Telnet stream does not survive a slow handover. The infrastructure therefore has to support and genuinely enable 802.11r for fast transition between access points, 802.11k so the device knows which one to move to, and 802.11v so the controller can steer it there. The practical threshold is a handover under 50 milliseconds.

Two things must be checked beyond the datasheet: whether the terminals themselves support these protocols, not just the access points; and whether they are enabled by default or have to be configured. A deployment that ticks 802.11r on the access point and forgets it on the devices solves nothing.

Isolating industrial peripherals: what nobody documents

Product pages state that a printer or reader has an Ethernet or Wi-Fi interface. No retail site then provides what an IT department needs: the segmentation rules and the precise matrix of ports to open.

Administrator practice is consistent: printers and industrial peripherals go on a dedicated VLAN, with access only to an equally isolated print server, and client machines receive printers by group policy rather than direct access. That segmentation protects the network from devices which, by their nature, are not patched on the same cadence as servers.

The flows to authorise are few and well known: TCP 9100 for raw printing, historically called HP Raw, TCP 631 for IPP, and UDP 161 for SNMP. Note that a great many print drivers query consumable levels and readiness over SNMP, which regularly surprises teams at first filtering. Blocking SNMP unknowingly leaves print queues looking offline for no visible reason.

The real selection criterion between platforms: the licence model

In enterprise Wi-Fi, three platforms come up systematically in European comparisons: Ubiquiti UniFi, Cisco Meraki and TP-Link Omada, with Aruba Instant On on small sites and Ruckus in difficult RF environments.

Technical quality is not what separates them most. What separates them is the commercial model. UniFi and Omada run with no recurring licence. Meraki requires an annual licence per access point, which makes it coherent for a centrally governed multi-site estate and expensive for a single-site SME. Over five years the total cost gap far exceeds the difference in hardware price.

Our job is to put that calculation on the table before purchase, not to defend a brand. The right choice depends on the number of sites, whether an in-house network team exists, and how long you intend to keep the infrastructure.

Network vocabulary, in three languages

Firewall / pare-feu / cortafuegos
All three are equivalent and all are used. In Spanish B2B, cortafuegos and firewall coexist in product sheets. Avoid the literal fire wall.
Managed switch / switch gestionable
In professional Spanish, switch gestionable is preferred to the more academic conmutador.
Access point / punto de acceso
In French, borne Wi-Fi and point d'accès are interchangeable. In warehousing, specify industrial access point or punto de acceso industrial.
Warehouse WiFi
The wording integrators use, alongside WiFi entrepôt and WiFi almacén. Avoid stockroom WiFi, which does not match the scale of a logistics warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

How many access points does a warehouse need?

The reference mesh is one access point per 300 to 500 m². That figure is a starting point, not a conclusion: ceiling height, metal rack density and fill rate all change propagation. Only an on-site RF survey gives the real number.

Why do my terminals lose the WMS session while moving?

Almost always because handover between access points is too slow. You need 802.11r for fast transition and 802.11k and 802.11v for device steering, enabled on the infrastructure and supported on the device, with a handover under 50 milliseconds.

Should printers sit on a dedicated VLAN?

Yes. It is consistent administrator practice: dedicated VLAN, access limited to an isolated print server, printers distributed to clients by group policy. These devices are not patched at the same rate as the rest of the estate and must not be freely reachable.

Which ports does a network printer need?

TCP 9100 for raw printing, TCP 631 for IPP, and UDP 161 for SNMP. The last one regularly surprises teams: many drivers query consumable levels and readiness over SNMP, so over-tight filtering makes print queues appear offline.

UniFi, Omada or Meraki?
